Beaumont Middle School’s eighth grade ag classes are among the 2024 winners of the annual Kentucky Farm to School Challenge. They will receive $330 in classroom materials, aquaponic books, a set of seeds, and gift bags from the Dairy Alliance. The state winners also received free tickets to the Kentucky Farm to School Summit set for Dec. 4 in Hardin County.
For this year’s challenge, students across Kentucky visited farms and orchards and hosted county extension agents, food service directors, FFA members, and farmers in their classrooms. At farms, students saw a variety of animals including cows, chickens, yaks, and bees as well as dozens of fruits and vegetables. They sowed seeds to be planted in their school gardens as well as indoor hydroponic systems in their classrooms. Students also tasted several different raw fruits and vegetables and prepared a variety of delicious treats like butter, sorghum, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, smoothies, apple cider, fresh tomato juice, ice cream, and more!
